- GEI is the first eye care center to adopt a multi-specialty services approach in India.
- GEI is the first eye care services and research institute to achieve ISO 9001:2000 quality certification in India. The scope of the quality certification includes medical and surgical eye care facilities
- GEI pioneered the planning and implementation of eye care camps and workshops abroad, especially in Africa, in collaboration with Rotary International.
- GEI was the first institute in Chandigarh to introduce the sophisticated Phacoemulsification (stitchless surgery) method of cataract surgery in 1993.
- GEI pioneered the implementation of a comprehensive eye care services center which renders services from general ophthalmology, research, surgery, complete optical shop, library, cafeteria, training auditoriums, conference facilities and online services.
- GEI pioneered the ophthalmology fellowship programme in the private sector.
